To detox or not - benefits or balderdash?

As always, we read around, ask around, then make our own minds up. Personally, I do, detox that is. We clean ourselves on the outside but rarely consider the condition of our inside. Beta Glucans are found in the cell wall of fungi and yeast, and in our not so hygienic past these would have been consumed in far greater quantities in our general diet. Hopi Ear Candles really do calm and soothe the ears head and mind! They've been around for centuries and have a good faithful following, increasingly so as more people seem to be suffering from sinus and ear conditions. Preparation
Before you start, always place a glass of water within reach in order to extinguish the Ear Candles.

Create a relaxed atmosphere before you start. American Indian relaxation music and essential oils are a good way to achieve this but we also sell at Elixir scented Ear Candles. You will experience earcandling much more intensely if you keep your eyes closed.

Keep yourself warm with a blanket. Lie down on one side in a comfortable position. Support your head with a pillow so that the auditory canal is in a vertical position. The room should be draught-free, so the flame will burn smoothly. Draught in the room while the Ear Candle is alight can result in small, cold ash particles blowing off the Ear Candle. In order to protect your hair and clothing, your partner can place a cover around the treatment area.

Lighting
When preparations are complete, your partner sits comfortably next to you. He/She should light the Ear Candle at the unlabeled end and place the non-burning end gently into the outer ear passage. A light turning movement should be applied until the Ear Candle is sealed in place. The Ear Candle is placed properly when you hear the pleasant crackling and hissing of the flame. Your partner will hold the Ear Candle firmly in place throughout the process. He/She will take care that no hair is within reach of the flame.

Burning down
Remember the Ear Candle has to be lit at the unlabelled end, opposite the safety filter! The Earcandle will never self extinguish! At the most, the Ear Candle may be burnt down to 1 cm above the red line (maximum burn) marking. Carefully remove the remainder of the Ear Candle and extinguish it in the glass of water nearby.

Treat both ears
It is generally advisable to treat both ears one after the other, each with a new Ear Candle. Any condensation material that remains attached to the fine ear hairs should be gently removed.

Subsequent rest
A subsequent rest of about 15 - 30 minutes will positively support the overall result. Continue to enjoy soft relaxation music and/or the smell of aromatic essences during this phase as well.

The Dr Bach Flower Remedies have a long-standing following and there's good reasons for that.

Dr Bach discovered 38 remedies, each for a specific emotional and mental state. They take effect by treating the individual, not the disease or the symptoms of the disease. Riding on a toy train

On Sunday 19th June a few of us went to St Teath, in North Cornwall, a pretty village by all accounts. It boasts a pub, a post office and a number of cottages and houses, what you would expect to find in a typical Cornish picture postcard setting.

But it also has the ST Teath Society of Model Engineers! To you and me it's a large spacious area, a field, if you will, where you can find the St Teath Railway Club. The club boasts over 1,000 ft of 5 inch gauge tract, and it's open to the public several times each year, subject only to the weather.

Yes, it's a big toy, or a small one if you will, but the fun is every bit as big and exciting - if not more - as going on a real life train, only in dinky form! And what fun it was. The club is open periodically to the public with cream teas and rides in support of charities and local groups. My wife and I, daughter and son-in-law couldn't have been more thrilled.

We went on the steam locomotive which pulled us through a beautifully landscaped area, as well as crossed a little bridge with a little river running below.

Just like the real thing our train broke down a few metres from the station, derailled by...not a leaf...but it didn't matter. The problem was quickly resolved when all the passengers stood up and the train driver quickly picked up the locomotive and set it down again! After stoking the boiler and topping it up with water, we were off again. There was steam in our faces and whistle sounds galore...all in all highly recommended - and a great father's day!

Wadebridge Big Lunch 2011 - A Huge Success

The people of Wadebridge flocked in droves and crowded the pedestrianised Molesworth Street to enjoy another fabulous Big Lunch 2011, thanks to the efforts of Harriet Wild, the organiser. Shayne House, summed it all up nicely:

"The second annual Wadebridge big lunch street party proved to be a tremendous success. The skies remained clear and dry as an estimated 1800 people flocked to Molesworth Street on Sunday to eat, drink and be merry.

And what a merry day it was. The bouncy castle didn't have a moment to breathe and the hog roast was licked clean. But it was the little touches that made the party extra special. Homemade bunting framed Molesworth Street, a photograph display depicted Wadebridge street celebrations from the 1800s, and the teddy bears picnic was a hive of activity all afternoon.

The live music was fantastic. It included The Fandangos, Jacki and Trevor, The Shipwrecks, Spot the Dog, Katy and Tom, Isis, Swan Song, Cy Parry, Georgia and star of the show – 10 year old Lani House.

This street party was one of many throughout the country, as part of the Big Lunch scheme dreamt up by the Eden Project. The idea is to get as many people as possible to have lunch with their neighbours on one day of the year. Founder of the Eden Project, Tim Smit joined in the Wadebridge celebrations, as did North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson.

If you're in North Cornwall, Sunday June 5th, come along to sunny (yes, sunny! Forecast is looking amazing) Wadebridge and help us celebrate our Big Lunch!

The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project.

The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. It's as simple as that!

Bring food to share or not; bring friends. With lots of others doing the same it's going to buzz and buzz.

Last year there were over a thousand people and the party atmosphere made your hair stand on end (like Tim's - see right). With music and festivities, food and whatnot on sale, it's a delight for young and old. Be there! Celebrating Norway's National Day on 17th May 2011 - Syttnende Mai

Recently returned from Tonsberg, Norway, where Randi and I celebrated their National Day, "Syttende Mai" with her family and friends. In 30 plus years of marriage, this was the first time I experienced the 17th May celebrations and I have to say those Norwegians really know how to party well! Although Oslo is the Norwegian capital, Tonsberg is the oldest town in Norway - actually inScandinavia (recently featured in the film "Thor") - and so National Day celebrations always means a lot there.

All age groups, young and old, participate and the town and people are festooned with flags and regional costumes, adding to the glitz and atmosphere. Celebrations begin early and carry on into the small hours with fireworks and parties rounding off the evening's delight.

A really great time was had by all!

A Little about Norway's National Day

After being part of the Danish autocracy for 400 years, Norway got its own constitution in 1814 and joined into a loose union with Sweden that lasted until 1905.

A limited and hereditary monarchy was introduced, whereby the king would exercise his authority through a government, while Parliament (Storting) would allocate monies and make laws. The Norwegian constitution was the most modern in Europe at the time.

Norway's Constitution, which declared the country to be an independent nation, was signed at Eidsvoll on 17 May 1814, and despite full independence having had to wait until 1905, this date remains Norway's official National Day.

Elixir Health Food's visit to Les & Diane's Quail Farm

What wonderful hosts Les and Diane are! On Sunday 21st November 2010, the Elixir staff (minus poor Rachel who couldn't make it) ventured out to visit their Quail Farm, in the attractive village of St Teath. And what a wonderful time we had. Diane took care of our refreshments while Les took our party in small groups to see the quails. Think Old MacDonald's Farm, minus all the animals but quails (and some handsome chucks).

Didn't realise quails were such sensitive souls! Our instructions were to avoid wearing red; and to proceed with caution, in groups of four, as any other approach might disturb their little equanimities. Some of us got to handle the cosy little birds but goodness, small they might be - but those little toe nails can scratch!

All in all, we had an unbeatable time and can't thank Les and Diane enough for their hospitality. We can rest assured that the quail eggs we sell at Elixir Health Foods come from a farm where the birds are professionally and environmentally cared for.

Finally, our Sunday excursion was rounded off with a very pleasing Sunday lunch at the Blissland Inn, in Blissland, one of the few outstanding Cornish villages still retaining its village green.

Between September and April as autumn and winter approaches sufferers of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) feel the effects most greatly. In those few months it's like a little bomb shell in their lives. Depression, feelings of gloom and despondency for no apparent reason, lethargy, lack of energy, anxiety, inability to cope, social problems, irritability, not wanting to see people, sleep problems, finding it hard to stay awake during the day and having disturbed nights, loss of libido, not interested in sex or physical contact, craving for carbohydrates and sweet foods, increased appetite leading to weight gain. Take your pick but apparently over half a million suffer this problem in the UK, with women affected the most.

To combat the effects there are a number of natural ways you can go. Keeping a sad lightbox handy is always a good idea and we stock a great range, according to need and pocket. The lack of sunlight reduces our serotonin levels, the absence of which is a major cause of depression and the winter blues. Sad Lightboxes, in other words using light therapy, is a proven drug-free way of alleviating the effects of SAD. St John's Wort supplementation, tincture, tablets or capsules is also useful for mild to moderate depression. I'm a great believer in taking a daily B Complex. I take one capsule of a B-100 a day and see the B's as part of my recipe for the stresses of modern day living. The B Vitamins are so versatile in nourishing the nervous system and dealing with stress, extracting nutrients from food, brain and heart health, energy, memory and all aspects of the body's growth, nails, hair, skin and so on. They're also helpful in the production of serotonin, the feel-good hormone.

Recently much is being written about Vitamin D3, the so-called Sunshine vitamin but particularly in terms of the higher levels we actually need if we're to benefit. A nutritionist friend of mine who takes a Vitamin D3 supplement of 1000mcg daily recently had his Vitamin D3 levels tested. He was shocked to discover that it was only 60% of what it should be!

So why all the fuss about Vitamin D3? Vitamin D3 promotes a healthy nervous system, healthy memory and brain, healthy blood vessel relaxation and blood flow. Vitamin D3 is also essential for healthy calcium metabolism promoting bone strength. Poor Vitamin D3 levels are also implicated in the causes of depression although more research is going on here as to how it occurs. Vitamin D3 strengthens our immune system, which helps protect us against colds and flu. And of course one of the major sources of Vitamin D is from the sun; so, in winter Vitamin D3 levels fall dramatically.

In the UK, two factors don't help here. Firstly, the lack of sufficient sunshine (we absorb Vitamin D via the skin) and secondly, the use of sun blockers. The accumulation of poor summers may well mean that our D3 levels are well below par. So take a good vitamin D3 supplement such as Solgar's Vitamin D3 2200iu, ("D3" is the most active, available form of Vitamin D), which is one of the highest strengths around.

Vitamin D3 also requires vitamin C, zinc, copper, and manganese to convert to its hormonal form in the body. Ensuring that adequate quantities of these nutrients are consumed daily via diet and supplements will help with this conversion. I like Solgar's Multivitamins or any of their range of Multivitamins but there other reputable brands of course. Don't go for the cheap supermarket type brands where the levels and quality of the active ingredients are so low or poor that it's hardly worth taking them at all.

As always, if you are on any medication consult your health care practitioner, speak to them first about possible contraindications with your medicine. Staff at a good health food store should also be able to give information in that area.

Bad Breath 'halitosis' - Solgar Acidophilus Digestive Aid - Bio-Health Psyllium Husks - and Lepicol

Bad Breath or 'halitosis', which in Greek means 'condition of breath' carries quite a bit of social stigma and is certainly up there with the top ten most difficult subjects to tell a friend about. No matter how charming and diplomatic you are it's still a delicate subject. If it was as simple to lay the cause at one door, it wouldn’t be so difficult to help customers who come in asking for help. And sadly, bad breath is not one of those symptoms we can pick up on ourselves.

From poor dental hygiene to dietary and medical issues, it can be slow to track down the causes of bad breath and eradicate it. If you rule out more serious reasons, it can often be a question of drinking more water and getting a little more exercise, something most of us don't do enough of. In order of importance they say tongue cleanliness, gum disease, nose and sinus infections, and down the oesophagus to the tummy is how bad breath pans out.

Personally, judging by customers' needs, I'm finding differing degrees of constipation is on a massive increase, and you can write a book on that one along with irritable bowel. The rather uncharming expression 'death begins in the colon' is definitely in part due to modern western eating habits. Certainly what goes on down there can have a direct impact on the mouth.

I appreciate a lot can be said on this subject but If your breath isn't persistently bad a round of good quality probiotic such as Solgar's Acidophilus may increase healthy bacteria in the bowel and improve digestion. Bio-Health's Psyllium Husks are also a good idea to improve bowel movements. Take them on an empty stomach half to an hour before food. (As is Lepicol, the capsules or granules are great for normalising the bowels.) In any event, none of the above will work unless you drink plenty of water - in fact it could even make it worse.

Usually, if you rule out some of the more serious reasons, I find that good bacteria are a quick inexpensive way to make bad breath less likely.

Otherwise, a couple of other options is to try a homeopathic remedy called Kali Phos , and while bad breath is rarely fixed by a breath freshner , they can take the pressure off in certain social situations. In which case, a good product is our fresh breath freshner , which is sugar and alcohol free.
