HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013 FROM ELIXIR!

Happy New Year 2013 Elixir folks. It's been a tough year in many ways for lots of us but remember Janus the god of January has two faces. One looking back, the other forwards.

Here's to fresh beginnings!

As Alfred, Lord Tennyson said:

"Ring out the old, ring in the new
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true."

PHYTO SOYA CAPSULES - THE ALTERNATIVE TO...MENOPAUSAL MISERY

If you have ever lived with a woman as she is going through the menopause, be it your wife or your mother, you will be aware that it can be a tough time in a woman’s life! Some women are fortunate enough to make the transition easily, but most experience at least one of a long list of symptoms which can range from hot flushes, disturbed sleep, stress, low energy and libido, bladder problems, osteoporosis, muscle and joint aches and pains, vaginal dryness, weight gain and IRRITABILITY! Well, wouldn’t you be, with all that going on?

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?
There are several options in how to deal with all this. You can try to persuade the body not to be menopausal by using hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but this is not suitable for every woman and is in any case only postponing the inevitable. Some women are also understandably concerned about side effects reported in the press, such as an increased risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots. Alternatively, you may like to try a soya based extract instead. It is a curious fact that women in the China and Japan do not suffer many menopausal symptoms so long as they eat a traditional diet, which is high in soya protein. Rather than changing your diet however, you may find it easier to try Arkopharmas’s Phyto Soya which will give you a soya boost without having to eat tofu every day.

So why soya? Well, isoflavones found in soya are oestrogen-like plant hormones (phytoestrogens), which help to reduce hot flushes and other symptoms by providing an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low. Phytoestrogens have been shown in several studies to reduce hot flushes significantly, and that is certainly something we have witnessed in our customers at Elixir. It is not hard to see how menopausal symptoms can make life a misery, particularly coming at a time when perhaps children are leaving home, parents are becoming old and frail, and at the same time realising that you are not getting any younger yourself. It is therefore important to know that there is help available even if you are not able (or willing) to take HRT.

Solgar Botanical Digestive Complex - The Alternative To...Digestive Discomfort

‘Tis the season to have – well, everything really, from mince pies to a mountain of turkey with all the trimmings, all washed down with whatever drink is on offer. No wonder ‘tis also the season for an upset tummy, with everything from bloating to intestinal cramping putting a dampener on the festivities.

Good digestion is the cornerstone of optimal health. Nutrients needed to nourish every cell in the body must come from the food that we eat. When the digestive system is not functioning well, the result can be detrimental to the whole body.

There are many times in life when your digestive system may need a bit of assistance. Stress, for example, can disrupt the digestive process by reducing digestive juices and slowing the movement of food through the system.

Digestive aids play a specific role in the process of supporting the different stages of digestion, absorption and elimination. At Elixir we are proud to present Solgar’s Botanical Digestive Complex, which provides nature’s finest herbs and botanical compound studied for their benefits to the digestive system.

Studies have highlighted the synergistic benefits of using many of these herbs and spices. Chamomile, fennel seed, lemon balm, peppermint and yarrow have a long history for calming the gastrointestinal tract and relieving intestinal spasms. Research has also repeatedly confirmed these benefits. Dandelion and gentian root contain various bitter principles, known to stimulate digestion and support liver health. A combination of these herbs may help to alleviate annoying and uncomfortable symptoms of poor digestion, such as excess gas, bloating and intestinal cramping.

In addition, there are things you can do to help yourself:

- Chew, chew and chew some more! Digestion starts in the mouth. Food has to be well broken down to be properly absorbed and there are no teeth in your stomach (I hope!)
- Don’t drink with meals as you’ll dilute your much-needed stomach acid and digestive enzymes
- Avoid using antacids. Heartburn is often a sign of low stomach acid, which will be reduced even further with antacids. Try taking digestive enzymes with meals instead

Solgar’s Botanical Digestive Complex capsules are suitable for vegans. There are no reported side effects, but speak to your doctor first if you are on medication.

QUEST VITAMIN C TIMED RELEASE - THE ALTERNATIVE TO... WINTER LURGIES

Is it just me, or does winter come around faster these days than it used to? Well, not exactly winter yet but you know what I mean – it’s certainly lurking around the corner. Next thing you know, they’ll be fiddling with the clocks again.

Still, it is a timely reminder to begin supporting your immune system before everybody starts coughing and sneezing around you. At Elixir, we are already seeing an increase in people wanting to protect themselves against the dreaded winter lurgies, which tend to work their way through the whole family.

The Quest range of Vitamin C products is designed to support the varying needs of the population, they are high potency and contains additional bioflavanoids which help increase vitamin C absorption by up to 35%. Personally, I particularly like the way Quest’s time release formula prolongs the delivery of the vitamin for a period of six hours, giving prolonged tissue saturation.

However, there is a lot more to the humble vitamin C than meets the eye. It is the primary antioxidant within the watery areas of the body, and though water-soluble vitamin C also protects blood fat and cholesterol from oxidative damage.

Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen (good for both your skin and joints), as well as adrenal hormones, which explains its anti-stress association. A severe deficiency in vitamin C can lead to scurvy – if only Captain Scott had known! – which has symptoms that are associated with the defective formation of collagen.

Vitamin C gives protection against cardiovascular disease, and helps to raise HDL (good) cholesterol which in turn aids the removal of LDL (bad) cholesterol from arteries.

Because of the detoxifying effect of vitamin C, it is probably the most important supplement for smokers. It also offers cell protection, which is useful to all of us.

Vitamin C is essential to the connective tissue of the eyes, which is very susceptible to free radical damage and oxidation; potentially leading to disorders such as cataracts or macular degeneration. Vitamin C may also offer protection against diabetic eye damage, by inhibiting sugar-induced damage of the eye tissue.

Another important role of vitamin C is connective tissue health and the way it promotes healing of tissue throughout the body. For example, post-operative supplementation has been shown to improve recovery time due to accelerated tissue healing and reduction of inflammation.

You may also find you suffer less from allergic conditions such as hayfever or eczema whilst taking vitamin C, due to its ability to lower histamine levels.

RICKETS AND THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN D3

Rickets has been in the news a lot recently in connection with young people because we've bored them to death about covering up in the sun and to splash on the sunblocker. But did you know that rickets may show itself as early as two months of age, when "craniotabes" (areas of softening on the skull) are noted? And furthermore, production of the first teeth may be delayed and the posture affected.

Rickets also produces enlargement at the end of long bones, resulting in characteristic bowing of the legs when the child starts to walk. The vitamin is made in the skin by the action of sunlight on cholesterol and it said 10-15 minutes exposure is good for us. Yea right, that's easier said than done; in many countries reliable sunshine can't be found, especially in winter. But even in hot countries, such as Dubai where Vitamin D3 is very popular, we still don't get the right sunshine because of the health risks of sun-exposure.

Apart from infants and young people, there are certain categories of people who are more likely to be at risk of vitamin D deficiency and who may therefore need to supplement with this nutrient.

These include:

- Vegetarians and especially vegans (Vitamin D is found mostly in animal and dairy products).
- Asian and African women and children who may not eat many vitamin D containing foods and who choose to cover up their skin.
- Pregnant and lactating women whose breast-milk can be low in vitamin D especially during the winter.
- The housebound elderly with a tendency to eat poorly.
- Nordic races where sunshine isn't available for certain months in the year.

So don't forget to take a good quality Vitamin D3 this winter, if not all year round! It has many other applications, such as helping calcium absorbtion, low mood, immune boosting for protection against colds and flu, general bone health, osteoporosis and during pregnancy.

SOLGAR MILK THISTLE - LIVER HEALTH

If you want help with liver detoxication and regeneration, look no further than the wonderful herb, Milk Thistle. Silymarin, the key active compound in Milk Thistle, is one of the most potent liver protective substances known.
Some party-goers, rightly or wrongly, nickname it the "hangover" herb, in which case if you're socialising and drinking alcohol, it is a very useful preparation to take afterwards.

Silymarin, the active ingredient, of Milk Thistle, has been shown to increase glutgathione production in the liver by around 30%, so increasing Milk Thistle's detoxification capabilities greatly.

So, if you're hoping to detox or diet, consider taking Milk Thistle, as part of your cleansing regime. Because of it's helping with skin cell replication and anti-inflammatory effect Milk Thistle is often used to help treat psoriasis.
