It’s funny how all the things that are good for you usually tastes horrible, isn’t it? In fact, mothers have for generations made their offspring swallow the worst concoctions with the line that ‘the worse it tastes, the better it is for you’. It therefore makes a welcome change when you realise just how good cherries are for you! There is a particular type called Montmorency Cherry which is just packed with antioxidant compounds, including quercetin, which helps fight free radicals that cause oxidative damage to the body’s cells.
The Montmorency cherry has been found to help maintain uric acid at healthy, normal levels. If you have ever suffered from painful gout or arthritis you will know how important that is! Uric acid is the waste product formed from the breakdown of food and protein in the blood. Should uric acid levels build up in the blood, typically beyond the normal, healthy range, it can form into needle-like crystals of sodium urate; which may cause inflammation, severe pain and swelling, often in the big toe and other joints.
Montmorency cherries have been extensively researched in the areas of cardiovascular health and inflammation, and have been found to give greater protection against free radical damage than tomatoes, carrots, water melons and even renowned ‘superfoods’ like acai and goji berries. In fact, a glass of diluted cherry juice offers better protection against many diseases than more than 20 typical portions of fruit and vegetables.
If you need more evidence to convince you, then how about the anti-aging effects of all those antioxidants? When testing what is called the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC), researchers were amazed by the results. They found the ORAC level of Montmorency cherry juice was 8260, compared with 1790 for fruit and veg. The result was in fact so startling that the analysis had to be double-checked for accuracy.
At Elixir, we have found Solgar's Cherry Turmeric Complex to be the most convenient way of getting your daily intake of this important nutrient. Apart from the benefit of Montmorency cherries, you also get the anti-inflammatory effect of Turmeric root and Ginger, the circulatory effects of Cayenne and the amazing qualities of another plant well known to you: Black pepper. Black pepper (or Piper nigrum, if you want to show off) contains a plant alkaloid called piperine which has a long history of medical use. Not only has it been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity, it has been demonstrated to increase absorbancy of other nutrients. In other words, it makes all the other ingredients work better!
Just so you know, there are no contraindications with this product but it is always a good idea to consult your healthcare professional if you are taking any other medication.
